MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010): No audio from the internal speakers and difficulties joining wireless

Symptoms

You may notice that MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010) plays the startup chime when initially powered on, but then has no audio from the internal speakers. Additionally, the internal speakers or default audio out item in the Sound System Preferences pane may be grayed out or unavailable to select. You may be unable to connect to wireless networks using AirPort on MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010).

Products Affected

MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010)

Resolution

This may occur when the wrong version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard is installed on MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010). Use the correct restore DVDs that were included in the box and designed specifically for MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010). Use the install DVDs that came with your computer.

Locate the restore DVDs that came in the MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010) box. If you cannot locate them, contact Apple and ask about fulfilling the correct restore DVD media for MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010).

Insert the MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010) restore DVD 1, then follow the instructions to begin the Installer.

Choose an Upgrade installation and use the second DVD as prompted, if necessary.

After installation completes and your MacBook restarts, run Software Update to make sure you have the latest versions of Apple software installed on your MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010).

Additional Information

Do not use a Mac OS X v10.6.0 or v10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail DVD (or restore media from a different Mac that shipped with Snow Leopard) to restore MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010); use only DVD that was included in the box.

I bought my iPad on launch day back in May. Firstly the decision of what size to buy, as I didn’t think I could fill 64Gb as I don’t have that much music and films, I opted for the 32Gb with 3G, middle of the road.

I choose the 3G option because I was sure in my mind that I would need to use the Internet when I am out and about with the iPad. However, five weeks on and I haven’t even looked into tariffs, let alone activate it!! I have wifi at work and wifi at home and when I am using the iPad elsewhere, its to play a game or read a book that I have already downloaded in a wifi environment to make it quicker.

It may help though that I have an iPhone, so the odd time I need to use the internet to find out what time my favourite shoe shop opens, that does the job for me, but my advice is to have a long think about whether you really want to spend the extra money for the 3G or could you put it to better use.

iPad - To buy, or not to buy?

 Why buy an iPad?

Since the news that the iPad was coming, a question I am often asked by friends is why do I need an iPad? At first it was a difficult one to answer because I couldn’t quite see the need for it when I already have an iPhone and a Macbook.

However, not one to miss out on an exciting new product, I got mine on launch day. To my surprise it is used everyday, either by myself to play games or watch movies whilst I wait to pick up my children or by the kids themselves. The product is so simple to use that my four year old regularly asks to play games, of which I haven’t taught her, she has just picked it up.

The iBooks are really useful for when you go away, much easier to take one iPad than several bulky books in the suitcase.

I also know of people who use them for work and no longer take their laptops around.

So, in summary, there is a place for the iPad, you just need to come in and try it out in the showroom to find out for yourselves.

Mac Portables: Getting the best performance from your computer’s battery

The battery has an internal microprocessor that provides an estimate of the amount of energy in the battery as it charges and discharges. The battery needs to be re-calibrated from time to time to keep the onscreen battery time and percent display accurate and to keep the battery operating at maximum efficiency. You should perform this procedure when you first use your computer and then every few months after that. If you normally leave your Apple portable computer connected to AC power and very rarely use it on battery power you may want to perform this process once a month.

iBooks and PowerBook G4s other than the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD)

Plug the power adapter in and fully charge your computer’s battery until the battery indicator lights turn off and the adapter plug light goes from amber to green, which indicates that the battery is fully charged.

Disconnect the power adapter and use your iBook or PowerBook. When your battery gets low, you will see the low battery warning dialog on the screen.

Continue to use your computer until it goes to sleep. At that point the battery has been sufficiently drained for calibration.

Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.

You have to fully charge and then discharge your battery only once to calibrate it. After that, you can connect and disconnect the power adapter when the battery is at any charge level.

Note: When the battery reaches “empty”, the computer is forced into sleep mode. The battery actually holds a reserve beyond “empty”, to maintain the computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is truly exhausted, the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, any open files could be lost. Therefore, it is important that you find an electrical outlet and connect the adapter before the forced shutdown occurs.

PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD), MacBook (all models), MacBook Pro (all models), MacBook Pro (17-inch) (all models) and MacBook Air

Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your PowerBook’s battery until the light ring or LED on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.

Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.

Disconnect the power adapter while the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power. You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low, the low battery warning dialog appears on the screen.

At this point, save your work. Continue to use your computer; when the battery gets very low, the computer will automatically go to sleep.

Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.

Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.

Note:When the battery reaches “empty”, the computer is forced into sleep mode. The battery actually keeps back a reserve beyond “empty”, to maintain the computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is truly exhausted, the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, with the safe sleep function introduced in the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) computers, the computer’s memory contents have been saved to the hard drive. When power is restored, the computer returns itself to its pre-sleep state using the safe sleep image on the hard drive.

Happy Charging..

Sending Font’s via email.

Sometimes when you create documents and artwork files and send them to colleagues they’ll tell you they can’t see the font, or its missing or “substituted”.
This happens because their machine doesn’t have the same fonts as yours. This is a common problem across PCs and Macs all over the world and can sometimes happen when you have bought a specialist font online and installed it on your machine for your own use.

There are two ways you can solve this problem:
1. Create a PDF of the document
2. Send the font with the document when you email it.

I’m going to talk you through sending fonts. Mainly because when the document you are sending is a presentation or a document that will need editing at the other end, PDFs aren’t always the best choice (I will be covering how to create a PDF and what they are soon. Watch this space).

To send a font you need to open Font Book where all your fonts are stored. The fastest and easiest way to do this is by using your Spotlight feature in the top right corner of your screen. Type the words Font Book in the field that appears and it should appear in a list. Select it by clicking with you mouse or trackpad and away we go.

The Font Book Screen will open in front of you and you’ll see a list of all the fonts currently installed on your machine.

I’m selecting the font Myriad Pro for this exercise as it is a font I use all the time but is specific to the Mac.

Select the file menu on the top left of the screen and choose “export fonts…”

The export font screen appears where you can choose what to call your exported file and where to save it to. I’m saving mine to my Desktop as I am intending to email it straight out as soon as i’ve finished this exercise.

Select the Save button and your newly exported font with the name you have chosen will appear on your desktop or destination folder that you have chosen as a folder.

Now i am going to literally pick up this folder and drag it using my mouse onto the mail icon on the bottom of my screen and a blank email will pop up with the font attached ready to send. You can also use the little paperclip symbol at the top of the email window to attach the files or presentations that are using this font. It’s that simple!

Many iPhone and iPod customers have given their main reason for not buying a Mac is because they didn’t think they could create, send and read Microsoft files such as Word or Excel on their mac.

Mac can create Word Documents, Excel Spreadsheets and Powerpoint presentations through iWork!

Here’s how to do it:

Word Documents

Open Pages

Create your pages document and select the file menu > Save

A dialogue box appears on your screen with a small blue arrow on the left hand side.

Click on this small blue arrow and this screen opens

There is a small check box at the bottom titled “Save copy as” which is unchecked.

Check this box and you are given the options to save your pages document as a “Word Document” or as “iWork 08”.

Choose “Word Document” and click on the save button at the bottom. Now you have a word document (.doc) saved in your choosen destination (in my case on the desktop but you may have choosen your own file to save it in)

Note:
Pages can always open word documents so don’t worry too much about saving a pages and a word version on your machine. I choose to stick to word when creating documents I regularly send out to people.

Excel Document

Follow exactly the same steps as with pages but in your Numbers program.

This time you will get the option to save as an excel document or an iWork 08 document.

as with Pages, Numbers can open excel documents with ease, so again, you can always just save as excel if that is your preferred choice.

Powerpoint Presentations

These steps are the same as pages and numbers but this time i shall give you a few extra hints and tips to make sure your presentation looks the same at the other end when you send it via email:

If you are using special fonts or fonts that aren’t shared with a PC (only a handful are shared between a mac and a PC) make sure you send them in the email along with your presentations, word documents etc. This is good practice when you send documents regardless of whether you are on a PC or Mac if the font styles are important to you. It’s very simple to do and I talk about how to do this in he next Knowledge base article “Tip 3”.

If you create something nice and fancy that Powerpoint can’t do, Keynote will tell you when you try to save it as a Powerpoint document. The best rule to stick to when creating something that will be used as a Powerpoint presentation is Keep it simple!

Farpoint opened the doors at 8am this morning with the brand new iPad readily available to waiting customers. One of these was Bath’s very own Midge Ure. Midge chose two iPads for his family and spent some time with the staff, familiarising himself with his new toy.

When asked why he chose Farpoint to buy his iPad despite being on tour and having the chance to buy anywhere else in the world, his answer was simple. “The guys know their stuff here, their friendly, familiar to me and for every other reason I mentioned in the video.” To see the video midge is talking about, visit our homepage videos.

You have a professional machine that you are using for your professional work, and for some reason you don't have a separate system (or at least a separate user account) for your personal stuff, web surfing, email, internet banking.

Internet banking, how could that be problematic?

Well it is due to a new piece of security software being pushed upon us by the banks. It's called rapport and is available as a plug in for your web browser.

Only problem is that when you have Q-Master installed on your machine (which you will have in the pro apps) the two don't mix well. To be precise when launching a pro app, rapport will cause an error report to be constantly generated which can take up to 90% of your processing power, causing your expensive and fast machine to feel very much from the dark ages.

Solution - don't install rapport on your work machine, but failing that have it in a separate user account where you intend only to do things like web browsing and email.

If you have already installed rapport simply going to it's preference panel and switching it off will stop the error report from being generated.

Un-identified Glowing Objects

Did you know?

When you close a screen in an application on your new mac it doesn’t mean you have “Quit” the application. It could still be running in the background and slowing down your machine as a result.

How can I tell?
You can tell when an Application is open or closed because it will appear in your “Dock” at the bottom of your screen and will always have a little glowing Orb below it to indicate it is open.

How do I make them go away?
If you have finished using the application and want to close it completely you can right click on the icon (hover your mouse over the icon on the dock and press down the right side of your mouse). A little black menu will appear, select “Quit”.

One Orb is always there in the dock
There is one orb that will always appear in your dock and that is under your Finder icon (little blue face in the bottom left corn of the screen). That is OK. It means your computer is alive and well and should always be there.

The summer is almost upon us and we thought "what better time is there to have a little facelift here at Farpoint?"

So out came the hammers and nails on Sunday evening and a whole new accessories area was created. With so much more space we can now add many new products to our range here at Walcot Street.

	New Accessories Area

This is only the first phase of our new look with a brand new Service check-in area following shortly. This area is designed to streamline the process of diagnosing and booking in your machines with our Apple Approved Service Centre which currently stretches out behind our showroom.

Not to mention even more display benches or on their way with the very latest products on display, ready for you to come in and have a play.

So come in and have a look at what we are doing and give us your thoughts. After all, Farpoint is your showroom too!

Pairing Your Apple Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard

Setting up your Wireless Keyboard and Magic Mouse couldn’t be easier! Your Apple computer will automatically look for Bluetooth devices on start up if you do not have a wired equivalent already connected. However one common issue arises at this point. You must make sure that you have switched the two devices on (forgive me for stating the obvious!), the power button on the keyboard is on the right hand side and on the underside of the mouse. If your computer fails to see your device try bashing a few keys and giving the mouse a click, this should cause the devices to announce their presence to your machine. Simple.

Pro Tip
Cant remember to keep a ready supply of AA batteries? All of us here at Farpoint keep at least a wired Mighty Mouse in reserve, consider it the hardware equivalent of your all important data backup!

Want to stop Flash loading automatically?

There is a great plug-in for Safari that will stop embedded Flash in websites from automatically loading.

If you are running Safari 3 or later go to clicktoflash and download the plugin.

Using ClickToFlash, all of those icky Flash bits that have infected most webpages on the internets are replaced with a nice, smooth gradient and the word “Flash” set in a nice, pleasing font. When you want to view the Flash, just click on it!

The advantages of ClickToFlash are numerous. Since Flash isn’t loaded until you specifically ask for it, your CPU usage will stay at normal levels when browsing the web. This has tons of benefits: web browsing stays speedy, your Mac laptop won’t get as hot, and your Mac’s fan won’t come on as often.

ClickToFlash supports viewing all those ADORABLE meowing cat videos, annoying dog videos, and hilarious rickrolls from YouTube without using Flash at all! That’s because YouTube also offers H.264 videos, which are used when viewing YouTube on the iPhone. With ClickToFlash, you get access to those same, higher quality videos.

With the Launch of the first Apple Macintosh computers in the early 1980s personal computing was given hardware and software that worked ‘for the rest of us’ who didn’t possess a degree in computer science. In the 1990’s we saw the proliferation of MacUser Groups. Set up by and for users of this revolutionary new device, they were very popular.

In those heady days of the early 90’s Bath based graphic designer Lee Edwards led a very popular Bath & Bristol MacUser Group whose meetings were based at AppleCentre Bristol.

Now they are back as the Bath MacUser Network (BMN). Social Networking is increasingly seen as vital to the health and profitability of the local creative community. Organisations like Creative Bath are thriving. BMN will compliment these activities with the focus on the tool, and its software, that is central to most of our working lives.

“We have chosen Farpoint Developments Ltd, our local friendly Apple Dealer, as our hosts for our monthly meetings. Their showroom on Walcot Street is the perfect backdrop with access to all the latest hardware (like the up-coming iPad) and software (Adobe Creative Suite 5 is due to launch this April). It will also give us access to the powerhouse of knowledge and creative solutions that Farpoint is famous for. In addition we aim to have guests from Apple, Adobe and other key players in the industry.” - Lee Edwards, Co-ordinator.

Membership is free and open to all MacUsers and those who are seriously interested in the Apple platform for both creative and business purposes.

Setting up Demon email in Mail. The right way.

An oddly specific knowledgebase, I know - but after spending an hour today trying to figure this one out I thought it was worth jotting down what I’ve learnt just in case it saves that one person hours of aggravation. You never know, I may have just made your day.

Email settings are an odd one, and something we get asked all the time. Usually fairly straight forward, especially if you’re using something like Apple’s own MobileMe or Google Mail - all that needs to be done is add a new account in Mail, enter your email address and password and Apple takes care of the rest. Smashing.
Less known ISP branded accounts are a little bit more of a faff - you’ll need an “incoming mail server” and an “outgoing mail server” (SMTP). Both of which you should be able to find on your ISP’s website (or just by Google-ing). Mail will prompt you where to put such things as part of the account set-up process.

So far, only one internet service provider has given me any real grief. And that was today. And that was Demon.

The settings posted on their website, besides being horrifically out of date, are wrong.
The settings they give out over the phone are also wrong. Great.

Here is the right way to set up a Demon email account in Mail:

Fire up Mail and go to “Mail” on the toolbar at the top and click on “Preferences”.

Under the accounts tab click on the “Plus” button in the bottom left to add a new account.

Enter your name, email address and the password you use to log on to Demon’s webmail page. Then click continue.

The account type is “POP” and call it whatever you like under the “Description”.

Incoming mail server is “pop3.demon.co.uk”, your username is your FULL email address i.e. user@hostname.demon.co.uk

So far, so good. Now, outgoing mail server is where it gets interesting.

Description, again call it what you like, “Outgoing Mail Server” should be “post.demon.co.uk” and check “Use Authentication”.

Despite what Demon will tell you, your outgoing mail server username is the part of your email address after the “@” i.e. “hostname.demon.co.uk” and the password is probably something you set up way back when you first signed up to Demon. It is NOT the same password you use to log in to your webmail. It is in fact an entirely different “WebPassword” password which luckily can be reset via Demon’s homepage under “Customer Tools” and “Change your Demon password”. For this you’ll need to log in using your “hostname” (the bit after the “@” but before the “.demon.co.uk” in your email address) and the password you use to access your webmail. Go figure.
Now change your “WebPassword” to something logical (that includes at least one capital letter, one lower-case letter and one number, as per their request) - and write it down!

Give it a few minutes to replicate the updated info across Demon’s servers, then, back in Mail, enter your newly changed “WebPassword” as your outgoing mail server’s password.

Click continue and let Mail check the mail server connection. When prompted, click “Create”.

You should now be greeted by an inbox containing your much cherished emails. Fantastic. But sending mail will probably still not work. You’ll need to do the following:

Back into “Mail”-“Preferences” and then the “Accounts” tab, click on the drop-down menu next to “Outgoing Mail Server” and click “Edit SMTP server list”. Highlight the server we just created and then click on the “Advanced” tab.

Check the “Use Custom Port” button and enter “587” in the box next to it.

Make sure “Use SSL” is checked and that username and password are still filled in (they should be) - click OK.

Phew. That’s it. Close the Preferences window and bask in the oft under-appreciated ability to send email.

Crying over spilled milk

We see spillages a lot here at Farpoint. In fact, you'll be surprised at how many. On average we would see around 5 laptops and some times as many as 6 iPods a month. Doesn't sound like too many, but convert that to money and you would be looking at £6000 worth of damage. Not to mention in some cases lost data and many tears to add to the mix. We've even see the occasional iMac which has fallen victim to rogue water fights in the summer months.

These Apple products are fitted with moisture sensors, when these are set off the warranty of the product is voided and the fault is marked up to "accidental damage". We can repair the machines out of warranty in some cases if they are salvageable but this isn't always the case. iPods are cheaper to just replace altogether.

But all this heartache is avoidable with some simple measures:

	1. Always back up your data

We can't stress how important it is to back up your data to a completely separate device such as an external hard drive, your Apple Time Capsule or to an online data storage site. Having your files in two places makes it much more likely to be able to restore it to your repaired/new machine. Not to mention it makes sense. Like they say, "never keep all your eggs in one basket."

	2. Check your Home Insurance is up-to-date.

We check our jewellery is covered but what about our digital photographs, our downloaded music, films, TV programmes, not to mention the expensive computer itself. It's simple to add to your existing policy and will save you a lot of trouble further down the line. Especially as our Apple Certified Technicians can provide you with a quote to pass on to your Insurers to cover. Think of it as your own special extended cover, covering bad luck.

	3. Be wary of drinks around your workspace.

We've all been there. A cup of coffee at 8am, the kids' beaker of Orange Juice, a glass of wine at a small gathering left on the desk when changing your music playlist. Eventually it is going to happen. Just making some simple rules for the kids' when sitting at the desk or table. Elevating your laptop or desktop when having parties, keeping iPods in a separate pocket from the packed lunch and Juice bottle in school bags, just small measures can help reduce the risk.

But be sure, you won't be the first and you certainly won't be the last if it happens to you. Just be safe in the knowledge that Farpoint's Service Centre will always be here when you need us most and you don't even need an appointment!

The phones are always going here at Farpoint, but 50% of those calls all ask the same questions, so I thought I would share them with you to save you having to pick up the phone:

"Do I need to make an appointment to come in to see you?" No, please come in anytime that suits you, we are now open 7 days a week.

"Do you do training?" – Yes and its only £25 per hour!! Not to mention it's one-2-one, at a pace to suit you.

"Should I back my computer up?" – Yes, please do, its really hard telling someone that they have lost all their precious photos. Every Mac has a program called Time Machine which automatically backs up your data for you, in the background whilst you work, to a storage device of your choosing (make sure this device is plugged in to your network).

"Can I extend my warranty?" – Yes, but you must do it before the first year anniversary from your purchase date and we can take care of it all for you. Ask us about Horizon Care. Not only are you covered for 3 years from the original date of purchase of you machine but it entitles you to Farpoint FastTrack repair service, remote support sessions (worth £380) and free Farpoint Telephone Support (£35 per incident when contacting Apple directly), familiar and local Farpoint Technicians and all of this for the same price as standard AppleCare. You can't say fairer than that!

Symptoms
When installing Microsoft Windows 7 on an iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) using Boot Camp, a black screen may appear. This can happen because the Windows 7 installer does not include the necessary graphics or Bluetooth drivers for your Mac.

Products Affected
Boot Camp, iMac (27-inch, Late 2009), Windows 7
Resolution

Follow the steps below to download the necessary drivers and install Windows 7 on your iMac:

Go to the bottom of this page and click Software License Agreement to agree to the license.
On next screen, scroll to the bottom of the page, then click Accept and Download if you accept the terms.
If you are upgrading from Windows Vista, you’ll need to use the Apple_Win7_Upgrade_Utility before starting an upgrade install.
The files are contained in a .zip file. Double-click it to expand it.
Connect your USB storage device or SD card.

Note: Your USB storage device must be connected to the back of the iMac directly and not to a keyboard or other non-high-powered HUB.

If the USB device or SD card has not been formatted as MS-DOS (FAT), or if you’re not sure, follow steps A through M immediately below; otherwise go to step 7.

Important: These steps will erase the contents of the USB storage device or SD card; back up any important files that are on it to a different disk.

Choose Go > Utilities.
Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB drive in the left side of the Disk Utility window.
Click the Partitions tab.
Click Options.
Click “Master Boot Record.”
Click OK.
Click the Format tab.
Select MS-DOS (FAT).
Name the disk MBRFAT.
Click Apply.
Click Partition.
When the process is complete, quit Disk Utility.

Drag “Drivers” and “AutoUnattended.xml” from the iMac_Late_2009_Win7_Drivers folder, which was expanded in step 4, to the USB or SD card device’s icon to copy the files to it. Do not copy them to any subfolders.
Start the Boot Camp Assistant.
Select a partition size and click Partition.
After partitioning has completed, click Start the installation and insert your Windows 7 install DVD. Your computer will restart.
Follow the onscreen Windows install instructions. If this is a new installation, remember to use the Windows installer to format the BOOTCAMP partition. You’ll need to click on Drive Options (Advanced) to see a Format selection.
Your computer will restart several times during the installation process. The screen may go black for several minutes while the Windows installer locates the drivers on your USB storage device. You should not turn off your computer during this process.
A screen should eventually appear asking you to establish a user account in Windows 7.
If the screen remains black after several minutes, power it off (hold the power button for several seconds), then go back to step 6. Ensure that your USB device or SD card is formatted as Master Boot Record, FAT, and that AutoUnattend.xml and Drivers are on the root level of the directory.

Software Updating your Mac.

It is important to keep your Mac’s software up-to-date. Apple are always bringing out security updates, bug fixes and software upgrades which are all free. All of these keep your machine running as efficiently, stably and securely as possible. Software update will automatically ‘pop up’ when it has new software for you to download and install. However you can manually check for new software updates by clicking on the apple symbol in the top left hand corner of your screen and then selecting ‘Software Update…’ which is the second option from the top.

In the current release of the iPhone OS if you happen to get a mail bounce back i.e. you try and send an email to an address that doesn’t exist, It could cause Mail to quit out.

To rectify the issue, log onto your webmail interface (Hotmail, Yahoo etc) and delete the offending message. It is usually from your Mail Delivery Subsystem.

Once you have done this, on the phone itself, go into Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Select the offending Address, scroll to the bottom of the page and press Delete Account.

You can then re-setup your account and mail should work.

Performing an Archive and Install.

First of all what is an Archive and Install? An Archive and Install is a great tool for resolving most software issues whilst keeping all your data and settings intact. Essentially the Operating System ie Leopard, Snow Leopard gets deleted and then re-installed. However before this happens all of your data including photos, musics and documents, everything gets copied and stored safely.

The only thing your need to perform an Archive and Install is either your original install discs which would have come with your mac in the box when your purchased it. This is what it will look like.

If however you have since upgraded your version of OSX you will want to use any purchased install disks. So if when you bought your machine you had Tiger (10.4) and later on your bought Leopard (10.5) you will want to use the Leopard (10.5) disk to perform the archive and Install. A retail copy of Leopard will look like this.

So lets get started and Archive and Install a machine. If your machine is already on then insert your install disk and restart your mac, when your mac restarts and chimes its time to hold down the ‘C’ key. Keep this button pressed for 25 seconds. If your machine is off then you can place the disk into disk drive whilst pressing the power button. The disk should get sucked in to your mac and you can press the ‘C’ key straight away.

Holding down the ‘C’ key will tell your mac to boot from the install disk and not your Hard Drive. In this example I will be using a leopard disk to perform an Archive and Install. If your using a different version of OSX do not worry as they are all very similar.

This is the first screen you should see, simply choose you language.

Now hit continue.

You need to read and agree to the End User License Agreement.

Select your boot hard drive and then click ‘options’ on the bottom left of window.

Confirm ‘Archive and Install’ is ticked and click on ‘ok’

Now click ‘continue’

And finally click ‘Install’

Once the Archive and Install has completed you should be able to log back into your Mac. It is important at this stage to perform any software updates your Mac should require. Click here for instructions on how to software update your Mac.

‘If you smoke, I smoke’

‘If you smoke I smoke’ is the tagline for the current stop smoking campaign in the UK. Who would have thought passive smoking and how it may damage the health of innocent victims applies to the computer too!

I had a machine in for repair recently the fault was that it would not turn on. Once I had the lid off I could see why, there was a layer of tar covering every component in the machine. The sticky substance had built up over time and in some places was quite thick. Both the logic board and power supply had failed resulting in a costly repair.

So if you do smoke near your beloved mac be mindful of the damage it may be causing because smoke damage = accidental damage and that is not covered by your warranty!

How to Use Parental Controls in Leopard / Snow Leopard.

Parental Controls is a feature of Mac OS X, first introduced with Leopard (10.5) and remains a useful feature of Snow Leopard (10.6). Parental Controls has a comprehensive feature set making it a viable tool for either parents who want to protect their children from content on the web or even for small businesses who would like to control and monitor how their employees use their macs. In this article we will look at the two most used and useful tools of Parental Controls.

Content

Apple have done a great job here of making content filtering very quick and easy to set up. You can see from the image below that there are two main categories.

Whilst ‘Hide profanity in the Dictionary’ is just a simple tick box Website Site Restrictions requires a little more thought. By default ‘Allow unrestricted access to websites’ is ticked which is offering no protection. To turn content filtering on simply tick the ‘Try to limit access to adult websites automatically’ Now OS X will be doing its best to vet any websites it deems to be inappropriate by using a built in list of words and phrases which are commonly found in adult websites.

If you feel that this is not enough you can add your own list of both websites you WANT to allow and websites you DONT WANT to allow. This is useful if you are trying to access a website which is appropriate but the built in content filter thinks otherwise, by adding that website to the ‘Always allow these websites’ list will bypass the content filter allowing you to view the page. Similarly you may come across a website that the built in content filter has failed to block, by manually adding the site to the ‘Never allow these websites’ list will prevent that site from being accessed again.

For ultimate control you can tick ‘Allow access to only these websites’ With this option chosen only websites that you manually add to the list will be accessible, everything else will be blocked.

For more information visit

Time Limits

Time Limits is a great feature allowing an administrator control over how much time other users are permitted to use a machine. In the image you can see three main sections. The first two sections ‘Weekday time limits’ and ‘Weekend time limits’ allow you to set the amount of time a particular user may use the machine. Once this time has been used up the user gets logged of.

In the final section you are able to specify at what times in the day a user is permitted access to his/her account. Again you can see how easy it is to get things all setup. Apple have even distinguished between ‘School nights’ and the ‘Weekend’

Apple security update

Apple has pushed out a major security update designed to crush a dozen security bugs, some of which present a critical security risk on unpatched systems. Many of the fixes involve flaws in third-party applications bundled with Mac OS X, rather than the flaws in the OS itself.

Customers are advised to software update their machines as soon as possible. You can do so by clicking on the small, black apple in the top left corner of your screen. Select “Software Update” A small screen/box will open saying, “checking for new Software” which will take a few moments. Follow the on screen instructions from there.
