Whether at school, college or university, textbooks are the bane of a students' day. They are heavy to carry, especially when you have more than one. They're expensive, and in this fast-paced world, they can become out of date quickly. The iPad can already do so much, now it can do so much more. You can potentially have all of your textbooks on your iPad. The iPad weighs well under a kilogram, much lighter than just one textbook. The iPad can store dozen of textbooks, allowing you to carry about all you need and more. Music, Films, Books and Games are examples of media that is available in a physical…

Dear Father Christmas, I have a deep burning desire for…. A USB-MIDI-MUSICAL-KEYBOARD. PLEASE. After a series of threats to cover the entire shop in posters of David Dickinson, Bruce Forsyth and Barbara Windsor, Rob and Jack gave up and let me hijack their blog theme on Christmas gifts. And boy do I have a special one for you, lucky lucky reader. Now, I can only assume that after reading my powerfully succinct and inspiring post on why Mac users should enjoy Garageband that everyone who read it helplessly started to experiment with the program. As I mentioned, Garageband comes loaded with every…

The treacherous journey through the streets of Bath elbowing your way through to the gifts section of Jollys or Debenhams trying to think who to give the self stirring tea mug you just found to. It shouldn't be this way. It shouldn’t be hard. It shouldn’t fill you full of dread. So Jack and myself will be rolling out a weekly gift idea on this, the Farpoint site, to make life easier. Filled with the best gadgets that anyone would be privileged to own. We start with one that I have asked Father Christmas for, the incomprehensibly cool AR Drone. A cross between a helicopter and a computer game…

So your iPad screen is blank and you can't turn it on, the first thing to check is that it is fully charged. If it's been plugged in to a power source for at least an hour and you've then tried plugging it into your computer but it still shows no signs of life, Don't panic!! Before you reach for the phone or bring it into us try pressing and holding the round button (home button) on the front of the iPad and the power button (top right corner) simultaneously for about 20 seconds. After a few seconds you should see the Apple logo and your iPad should start normally. If there is still no sign of…

One complaint against Apple computers that I've heard in the past is that they're not the best designed machines to play video games on. For a while, all I could do was awkwardly smile and agree that yes, Mac isn't designed with video games as a priority. Now, I've always associated Apple with more professional industry work. Film editors use Apple computers. Professional music studios use Apple computers. Photographers use Apple computers to edit their work, and this was always my justification for the lack of video games. Apple computers are designed for professional and creative industry work,…

It's a common misconception to think the Apple TV is actually big screen TV made by Apple. It's actually a little black box that I would describe as a "hockey puck" that looks so completely unassuming and insignificant. But insignificant couldn't be further from the truth. I am now running my household viewing habits around this little device which offers me so much more than I thought. With film rentals straight from iTunes Store, video streaming and music from your Mac, photos from Flickr all wirelessly there are no cables other than power. This was a big plus for me as our house was starting…

Very recently I was asked to hold a presentation for business professionals in Wiltshire and after a lot of deliberation on what I was going to use as my subject I decided to settle on talking about what technology I use on a daily basis and what tools help me through the day. I was very surprised once I started taking notice of these little gadgets, just how much of my life they are managing for me. I had never really thought of myself as being dependent on technology but now looking at everything I do, i've discovered that reality couldn't be any further from the truth. As I sit writing this…

Although it's diminutive size may place it firmly in the netbook genre of portable computer, the new MacBook Air certainly doesn't fit the mould as far as it's specification is concerned. Sporting a core 2 duo processor, SSD memory and high resolution displays in both an 11" and 13" model, the Air packs more power under the hood then your average netbook, whilst maintaining a vary svelte profile at just 1.7cm at it's thickest point. It also lasts, with a battery life of up to 7 hours (5 on the 11" model") and a standby time of up to 30 days you can just keep working and playing and working and…

I bought my iPad on launch day back in May. Firstly the decision of what size to buy, as I didn’t think I could fill 64Gb as I don’t have that much music and films, I opted for the 32Gb with 3G, middle of the road. I choose the 3G option because I was sure in my mind that I would need to use the Internet when I am out and about with the iPad. However, five weeks on and I haven’t even looked into tariffs, let alone activate it!! I have wifi at work and wifi at home and when I am using the iPad elsewhere, its to play a game or read a book that I have already downloaded in a wifi environment…

Why buy an iPad? Since the news that the iPad was coming, a question I am often asked by friends is why do I need an iPad? At first it was a difficult one to answer because I couldn’t quite see the need for it when I already have an iPhone and a Macbook. However, not one to miss out on an exciting new product, I got mine on launch day. To my surprise it is used everyday, either by myself to play games or watch movies whilst I wait to pick up my children or by the kids themselves. The product is so simple to use that my four year old regularly asks to play games, of which I haven’t taught her,…

You have a professional machine that you are using for your professional work, and for some reason you don't have a separate system (or at least a separate user account) for your personal stuff, web surfing, email, internet banking. Internet banking, how could that be problematic? Well it is due to a new piece of security software being pushed upon us by the banks. It's called rapport and is available as a plug in for your web browser. Only problem is that when you have Q-Master installed on your machine (which you will have in the pro apps) the two don't mix well. To be…

They use Unix. The Apple I went on sale in July 1976 and was market-priced at $666.66. The first Apple II computers went on sale on June 5, 1977 with a 1 MHz microprocessor and 4 KB of RAM (expandable to 48 KB). We see spillages a lot here at Farpoint. In fact, you'll be surprised at how many. On average we would see around 5 laptops and some times as many as 6 iPods a month. Doesn't sound like too many, but convert that to money and you would be looking at £6000 worth of damage. Not to mention in some cases lost data and many tears to add to the mix. We've even see the occasional iMac which has fallen victim to rogue water fights in the summer months. These Apple products are fitted with moisture sensors, when these are set off the warranty of the product is voided…

‘If you smoke I smoke’ is the tagline for the current stop smoking campaign in the UK. Who would have thought passive smoking and how it may damage the health of innocent victims applies to the computer too! I had a machine in for repair recently the fault was that it would not turn on. Once I had the lid off I could see why, there was a layer of tar covering every component in the machine. The sticky substance had built up over time and in some places was quite thick. Both the logic board and power supply had failed resulting in a costly repair. So if you do smoke near your beloved mac be…
